The project “Tashkent – accelerating the attraction of investments in low-carbon road transport” was launched

The Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have launched a joint project “Tashkent – accelerating investment in low-carbon road transport.”

The main goal of the project is to ensure inclusive, safe and sustainable cities and towns by reducing the amount of harmful substances emitted into the atmosphere by transport, and taking urgent measures to combat climate change and its consequences.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has allocated $3.57 million to finance this project. UNDP will allocate another $300,000 for the implementation of the project. The share of Uzbekistan in the project is $25.57 million.

The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Transport together with ministries, departments and organizations during 2022-2027.

In the course of this project, it is planned to reconstruct Shota Rustaveli Street in Tashkent, create a green urban transport corridor on this street, providing pedestrian and bicycle paths, as well as separate lanes for public transport.

It is also planned to launch electric buses along the green urban transport corridor, as a result of which social, economic and environmental indicators will be collected and analyzed, and based on the results, a roadmap and strategy for the development of electric transport in Uzbekistan will be developed.

In addition, based on the positive experience of the project implementation, it is planned to introduce green urban transport corridors in other cities of Uzbekistan.
