Tasks in the railway sector were identified

On May 27, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev got acquainted with a presentation on measures to develop the railway industry, the press service of the head of our state reports.

In accordance with the decree of the head of state dated October 10, 2023, large-scale reforms are being carried out in this area. Joint-Stock Company ‘‘Uzbekistan Railways’’ has undergone a structural transformation: non-core assets, adjacent land plots and unnecessary functions have been reduced. As a result, the company, which previously operated at a loss, ended the year last year with a net profit of 47 billion soums. After the creation of the company ‘‘Temiryoʻlkargo’’, the efficiency of using freight cars has doubled.

However, the potential of the industry is far from exhausted. During the presentation, tasks were outlined to develop infrastructure and increase revenues.

In particular, the possibilities for transporting transit cargo are not fully utilized. By increasing the volume of such transportation by 40 percent in the coming years, it is possible to double the income.

For example, freight trains were launched on the China-Turkey route for the first time. New trains are being brought into the country, and the number of trips is growing every year. In this regard, the need for a gradual increase in the capacity of the railway infrastructure was emphasized.

This issue is especially relevant in the suburbs of Tashkent. Currently, 70 percent of external cargo passes through the Chukursoy station, which sometimes leads to multi-day delays, additional costs and queues.

In this regard, it is proposed to move freight stations outside the capital and build large stations in the Yangiyul district and near New Tashkent. It is also planned to build a bypass line ‘‘Ozodlik – Gulistan’’. This will double the volume of freight traffic without calling in Tashkent.

Among the new projects is the Samarkand – Urgut railway line. Currently, 7 kilometers of rails have already been laid. The total length of the line will be 54 kilometers, 2 railway stations and 2 freight stations will be built on the territory of the Urgut economic zone.

Special attention was paid to the issues of simplifying access to the territory of the railway stations, improving the quality of services provided. The need to create conveniences for travel, improve conditions for tourists and expand parking was noted.

Responsible persons also made reports on plans to purchase electric trains and improve the quality of railway services.
