Population of Uzbekistan reaches 36.024 million people

According to “Gazeta.Uz”, over the past year, the population of Uzbekistan increased by 753 thousand people and reached 36.024 million. The country leads the birth rate in the CIS. In the context of the last five years, the number of marriages has decreased.

The resident population of Uzbekistan as of January 1, 2023 amounted to 36.024 million people, according to the demographic report of the Agency on Statistics under the President.

Thus, over the year, the population of the country increased by 753 thousand people, or by 2.1%.

The report also provides retrospective data: in 1920, the permanent population of Uzbekistan was 4.4 million people. Thus, to our days, the population has increased by 7 times.

By the beginning of 2023, out of the total population, there were 18.13 million men and 17.89 million women. The urban population was 18.33 million, the rural population was 17.69 million.

People younger than working age make up 31.7%, able-bodied – 56.8% and older than working age – 11.5%.

The population density in the country was 80.2 people per square meter. km. This is 1.6 more people compared to the same period in 2021 (78.6 people per 1 sq. km in 2022).

In terms of regions, the highest population density was 6597.5 people in Tashkent, 772.7 in Andijan region, 588.2 in Fergana region.

The lowest rates were recorded in Navoi region – 9.5 and Karakalpakstan – 11.9 people.

Fertility

The number of live births in 2022 amounted to 932.2 thousand people, of which 482.4 thousand are boys, and 449.8 thousand are girls. 473.4 thousand people were born in cities, 458.8 thousand in rural areas.

The share of births of one child was 97.8%, two children – 2.1%, three or more children – 0.1%.

Among women in labor, women under 25 years old were 38.9%, 25-39 years old – 60.1%, 40 years and older – 1%.

Fathers under the age of 25 were 10.7%, 25-39 years old – 83.4%, 40 years and older – 5.9%.

According to the Agency on Statistics, Uzbekistan tops the rating of the CIS countries in terms of birth rate (26.2 live births per 1,000 inhabitants). Next come Kazakhstan (23.5), Kyrgyzstan (22.4), Armenia (12.4), Azerbaijan (11.2), Moldova (11.2) and Russia (9.6).

The peak of the birth rate last year, as in previous years, falls on August and the first autumn months.

Mortality

The number of deaths in 2022 amounted to 172.1 thousand people, including 95 thousand men and 77.1 thousand women. In cities, this figure was 92 thousand, in rural areas – 80.1 thousand.

Of the registered deaths, 55.5% were diseases of the circulatory system, 9.6% were diseases of the respiratory system, 8% were neoplasms, 5.5% were accidents, poisoning and injuries, 4.1% were diseases of the digestive system, 1 .4% – infectious and parasitic diseases, 15.9% – other diseases.

The mortality rate of the population when distributed by age groups was: under the age of 20 years – 20%, from 20 to 59 years old – 24.6%, 60 years and older – 55.4%.

A relatively small number of deaths were registered in January and September, and the largest in July and August.

The Statistical Agency also provided retrospective data on the mortality rate.

Marriages

The number of marriages registered in 2022 amounted to 296.7 thousand, which is significantly less than the number of the last five years by 14.7 thousand, or 4.7% less than in 2018.

In cities last year, 149.3 thousand people got married, in rural areas – 147.4 thousand people.

The average age of women who entered into marriage was 22.3 years, and men – 26.5 years. The largest share of registered marriages fell on people under 25 years old, which is 55.5% of their total number.

The largest number of marriages is observed in September and October, while a relatively small number is observed in April and May.

Divorces

The number of divorces amounted to 48.7 thousand and has increased significantly over the past five years. Compared to 2018, their number increased by 16.4 thousand, or 50.8%.

In cities, 30.2 thousand divorces were registered, in rural areas – 8500. The average age of divorced men was 39.2 years, women – 33.1 years. The largest
the proportion of divorces falls on the age of up to 35 years, which is 50.5% of their total number.

Migration

In 2022, the number of arrivals amounted to 214.8 thousand people, including 85.6 thousand men and 129.2 thousand women. The number of people who arrived in urban areas amounted to 164.3 thousand people, in rural areas – 50.5 thousand.

The number of people who arrived from foreign countries for permanent residence amounted to 2,300 people – men and women approximately equally. Over the past five years, compared to 2018, there has been a decrease by 600 people, or 20.7%.

The largest share of those who arrived at a permanent place of residence in Uzbekistan from abroad falls on those who arrived from Russia (813 people, 35%) and Kazakhstan (761 people, 32.8%). 6.7% are registered from Tajikistan, 4.8% from Kyrgyzstan, 1.6% from Turkmenistan, and 19.1% from other countries.

The number of people who left Uzbekistan amounted to 221.3 thousand people, including 88.5 thousand men and 132.8 thousand women. Those who left the cities amounted to 145.8 thousand people, from the countryside – 75.5 thousand.

8800 people went abroad for permanent residence, which is significantly less than in the last five years, compared with 2018 – by 8800, or
by 50%. Among those who left for permanent residence are 4,100 men and 4,700 women.

The main share of those who left Uzbekistan falls on Kazakhstan (6985 people, 79.5%). Next come Russia (16.4%), Kyrgyzstan (0.7%), Tajikistan (0.5%), Turkmenistan (0.3%) and other countries (2.6%).
